Portugal has a rich and varied equestrian history and, consequently, a vivid equestrian culture.  Visit historical sites that tell Portugal’s equestrian history.

The horse has always played an important role in Portuguese culture and the horse has always been connected with the major events of Portuguese history. Horses were present in battles, conquests and celebrations during the defining moments of the country, but still maintained their humble place close to people's everyday lives, as working horses on farms, for transportation and leisure.

Portuguese people admire and cherish horses, something that can still be seen during traditional Portuguese festivities even today. In every village there is some kind of special celebration that involves a horse parade, demonstration or bullfight. The sound of horses "dancing" in  the street is always a sound of celebration! In the main cities horses decorate the streets in statues in the principle squares. A symbol of power and beauty, the Lusitano was always the perfect model. Come and discover the horse culture in Portugal and how it was and still is very much a part of the Portuguese way of living.
